I figure since we have a thread about books, we might as well have one about movies too.

My favorite would have to be the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkein was an amazing writer, and I think that Peter Jackson did a great job at bringing it to the silver screen, even though many parts of the book were left out of the movies (but hey, if they would have included everything, each movie would probably be six or more hours long, not three).

How about yourselves?

Can't say I have a favorite movie. American Beauty tends to come to mind, but there are so many other great movies. It was the inspiration for my Exploring Myself article.

Maybe if I break it down by genre/style

Christmas - The Muppet's Christmas Carol
Musicals - Moulin Rouge
Classics - Sunset Boulevard
Cult hits - Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension (or Barbarella)
Hitchcock - The Birds
CG Animation - The Incredibles
Disney - Robin Hood (or Little Mermaid)
Sci Fi - Star Wars (or Serenity)
Adventure - The Princess Bride (or Jurassic Park)

I think I'd better quit. I'm getting a headache trying to pick out of all the movies I've seen.

I have so many favorites, I don't think I could post them all with the character limit in this post! If I broke it down, my definite favorites would have to be Gladiator, The Matrix, Saving Private Ryan, Office Space, Stargate, and the Starwars series.

Unfortunately I haven't had enough time lately to go out and watch many new movies, but I did enjoy watching Cloverfield in theaters earlier this year.

I wonder what it says about people and what they decide are favourites. Are certain people drawn to certain movies, or does one's experiences tend to dictate whether a show has intrinsic value? A co-worker of mine adored Children of Men (book by PD James) when she went to see it, raved about it being the best movie she's ever seen. I went and came out of the show thinking, "If that's the best she's ever seen, she hasn't seen many movies." Not that it was bad, but I've seen many dark future movies that told their stories better. Judgment call, I guess.

LOST!!! But that's a tv show.

So Shawshank Redemption is a classic of course and 2001. I think personality traits partly dictate what a person might enjoy to watch and it might also be experiences and also influences from family and friends. For me I can't put my finger on it maybe it's experiences but I can't remember being in a prison in New England with a guy called Red ("maybe it's because I'm Irish").

Oh yeah and the hype about Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight wasn't because he past away, he really was amazing, if you haven't seen it yet you should.

A very good actor in an excellent movie; arguably the best to come out this year. I agree that the movie deserves the hype, and I'm sure it would have been equally successful if he wouldn't have passed away.

Agree. One of the most convincing performances. Ever.

Anyway, I'll follow opinion's formula to make it easy.

CG Animation - Finding Nemo
Asian - Battle Royale
War - Taegugki: The Brotherhood of War
Horror - Saw 1
Adventure - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Drama - My Sassy Girl
Action - Kill Bill

Sleep, those little slices of death; Oh how I loathe them.
