I thought I'd open up an open and frank discussion that's not muddled through review replies and comments.

If you have any strong opinions on IncreMental, feel free to post them here.
Personally, I don't have a problem with him. His reviews are honest, albeit a tad aggressive, and coming from a different mindset than the norm around here; I think he could actually bring in some fresh perspective to our small little community.

I hadn't actually noticed him until today, but after seeing this thread, I took a look at a few of his recent reviews. I don't have a problem with the fact that he's voicing his opinion by writing negative reviews, but I do have a bit of a problem with his attitude.

His review on the girl across the street is obviously very argumentative, and I don't really like to see reviews like that, but there's obviously some kind of silly rivalry going on there, so I'll keep my mouth shut.

In his review of From a daughter of Sea Captain somewhere in Cali, he fills the "Pros" section of the review with insults disguised as advice. (Pros? Really?) I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he missed the point of having a "Pros" section, but personal insults in reviews are unacceptable no matter where they are.

As for the rest of his reviews, he easily could have written them without being so harsh. (Calling someone's poem "fucking terrible" is hardly constructive, even if it is terrible.) But aside from a few comments which really crossed the line, he's entitled to his own opinion, and I'm not just saying this because I think freedom of speech is great.

We don't want Papertank to become one of those mickey mouse writing communities where only positive reviews and sugar-coated criticisms are acceptable. Being everyone's friend is not a requirement, and not every negative review must consist entirely of constructive criticism. When a movie critic reviews a bad movie, he doesn't give the director helpful advice; he tells everyone that the movie stinks. We should expect to see that here, as well, even if not everyone likes it. Furthermore, no matter how good you think your writing is, someone on the internet is going to hate it, and you should be prepared to hear what they honestly think.

Some of IncreMental's comments were not called for, but for the most part, they aren't really surprising. This is the internet, after all. My advice to IncreMental is to stop using words like "terrible" and "awful" in review titles, and to cut down on the profanity. As much as I admire your brutal honesty, the rest of the community might take offense at your language and mark your reviews as "unhelpful," which basically lowers your impact on an article's score. Just about everything on the site is run democratically, so whether or not you break the rules, you don't have a whole lot to gain by trying to piss everyone off.

I have no problem with a harsh review. Personal attacks are different especially when writers are forced to accept freedom of speech of a reviewer but not be able to dismiss reviews they feel are unjust or simply unpeasant without invoking a personal vendetta from someone they have never met. If a real reviewer got so personally involved they would not have a job.

If Martin Luther can have a fucking dream, then I can too.

My dream? My four fucking kids are my ten fucking fingers, and they WILL sit down to the table of my keyboard, and they will break bread with basic truths.

But the medium is the internet. The truth is only what is believed. My intent and my voice are irreconcilably different - though most understandably so, if you're inclined to listen.

If you were to sit me down, in your minds you are sitting the 'body' behind the alias 'IncreMental' down.

But I am not IncreMental, I am an idea. Inasmuch as I represent more than one idea, I have more than one alias.

Maybe I'm bunnymaster, or maybe I'm michael, though ask us and we'd deny it to the end.

Perhaps I've been here since before PaperTank, tss, or maybe I got here a month ago.

But you will only ever get to talk to one of me at once, and never knowing the whole person behind the facets or apparent fascism, elitism.

IncreMental is only a name that alludes to the tiny, mental facts that make up the truth behind any idea. Incrementally sense is made as a whole, while the sense behind the tiny parts that make up the whole is generally lost. I'm just those tiny parts speaking.

Sometimes aggressively. Like when someone sends out a little lie towards the internet, like From the Daughter of a Sea Captain, and expects it to be swallowed.

My ire there was simply a younger author trying to pass off work as an undergrad - yet anyone with any common sense and even 1 billionth of Holmes' intuition knows that poem was written by no undergrad.

I antagonize THAT truth over and over again, sure. I wouldn't have it they'd been straight up about their age though.

But that statement there leads to a possibility of being proven wrong. She IS an undergrad! ZOMFG INCREMENTAL U R TEH IDIOTZ. So, to allow for that possibility I merely state what is also true about that poem if it was written by an undergrad.

Basically, that the said undergrad is in the wrong fucking courses. That they should stick to numbers, as they won't have trouble raping them quite as hard. Numbers tell on you when you fuck up. Letters pompously encourage you.

Anyways, as people I will tell you all I respect you. This is why I have more than one alias with more than one disposition.

As reactions, I don't always. Which is why I have this alias.

But as writers, I value each and every one of you. Just as no site or story is complete without an antagonist... just don't let me be the protagonist as well, or you're all just side plots!

Meant with as much desire to be understood as can be mustered, yet with as little expectation for the same.

Now, fuck off.

Why don't you submit THAT as an article?

Papertank supports personal opinion. Papertank supports reviews, whether they be harsh or not. Papertank supports honesty. Papertank doesn't support personal attacks. If anyone has a problem with anybody else, it can be delegated by the community as seen here. If you're having a very serious problem with a member, contact the staff and we'll take care of it.

Hi Gang----Martin Luther never had a fucking dream. Martin Luther was a well educated man who never ever felt the need to use the crutch, of the conversational cripple.

IncreMent is a coward, who hides behind aliases and hurls non-constructive insults at people of whom he knows nothing about. He may well sit down with his four fucking children and ten fucking fingers at the table of his key broad, but he wouldn’t know a basic truth if it hit him in the forehead, after flying off the tine of a manure fork.

The basic truth is, IncreMent doesn’t aim to dazzle us with his literary abilities, his goal is to shock us with his vulgarity.

Talk to you soon---ablelaz.

Honest replies are great.....I'm all for a harsh but true review - if something is really bad then I need to know and the constructive reasoning behind this commentary will help me focus on improving.

Constructive critisism is needed - merely saying 'it's crap' - while it is an opinion and shouldn't be discarded - it is not helpful.

Personal attacks should be discouraged...so what if someone says they are in college and they are actually 12? We're not judging the person we're judging the quality of writing. If I had a dollar for every person on the web who lied about who they were or how old they were I could probably save GM myself!!!

To be or not to be....that is totally illogical captain.....Spock.

And that's exactly why members are given the option to rate a review as helpful or not. If you believe any of IncreMental's reviews are unhelpful, rate them unhelpful and they will be removed, but do not rate them unhelpful because you do not like IncreMental.

Chapter 3

Dri focused on the glass sphere that relaxed in a velvet cushion, the creak of the bow dispelled the suffocating silence, his lips tightened into a thin line as he drew it back and his green eyes sharpened. A sigh escaped him as he relaxed the bow.

“No.” he breathed, disappointment soured his face, “not good enough....
