They join and post an article and then disappear. I wonder if some of them are the same person trying to get around the 3 day rule.

Are so many random new users common for this place?

Maybe some people, after submitting one article, decide that they don't like the site. Maybe they leave if they don't get a bunch of reviews right away. Or maybe they're just not into the whole "community" thing and would rather submit one piece of writing in a thousand different places and never look back.

What really confuses me is when a person joins and never does anything. What's up with that? (Actually, now that I think about it, even I've done this a few times. Sometimes I set up an account thinking, "I'll use this site later." And then I never do, and by the time I remember the site, I've forgotten the password.)

Most people join a site solely to use it's primary function, which in this case is submitting writing. A very small percentage of users actually participate in community functions, such as giving feedback or posting in the forums.

It's a sad fact, but it's reality.

aye, a lot of people only join writing sites so they can flood the front page with their stuff. i am a member of four different writing sites. the ones that piss me off are the ones that allow absolutely no profanity in your writing (censorship) or the ones that require you to critique three poems for every one you post. which sucks, cause then you get the inevitable "great write, keep writing" bullshit critiques.

i have posted two poems on this site so far, and have only responded to a few others, but i like the one every three days rule and also the fact that the people that have thuse far critiqued my work seem to have a clue and actually offer helpful suggestions instead of blowing smoke up my ass.

i have the luxury of being a long time member and have vip status at the other site i frequent, so if someone posts something that absolutely sucks balls, i cant tell them that without fear of getting asshole responses to my critique.

nothing pisses me off more than someone that attacks me after i critique their work. i am taking my valuable time and trying to help someone and because i tell the truth and give an honest opinion they flake out and get pissed.

i actually had one woman get pissed because i pointed out her ample amount of spelling errors and tried to explain meter to her. she informed me that i was wrong and that she is a published author. turns out she is self-published and that she actually stole the whole opening page from a dead writer's earlier book. some people.

so in short, i like it here so far.

I agree; it's pretty ridiculous when people feel the need to attack a person because of an honest critique. We have a zero tolerance policy towards that type of immature behavior, and if we see it, there will be consequences.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear you enjoy the site so far.

I agree! What I like about papertank is that people seem to give some decent advice, and also accept criticism with dignity - the whole point is to learn from others...I know in the short time I've been here I've learned a lot...

The other sites seem too 'self important'.....

I think the smallness of the site helps too. Get less of the wandering trolls and flamers, and gives a sense of community at the same time.

I've posted one article - a long one, I admit - and voted / reviewed / commented on quite a few others, but I've only had one vote on Perfect Insanity. My life doesn't allow me to be on here all the time, so apparently the 'community' of Papertank doesn't welcome me.

Forvige me if I sound a tad bitter.

First - I've noticed long short stories don't get a lot of attention on here. I know, because my own has the exact same score as yours. It's nothing you should take personally, it's just the internet. tl;dr. that whole thing.

Second - You only posted one article, and that was almost a month ago now. The fact that this one article is a lengthy short story does not help your argument.
We're perfectly willing to accept you here, just submit some more articles. Do you only have that one short story, or were you waiting for some reviews on that before you posted more?

Don't be bitter just because you don't understand the system. It's a shame that short stories don't get noticed here, but what can you do?

Longer submissions never really get as much attention as shorter ones, simply because fewer people actually have time to finish them. Even I haven't had much time to participate on the site recently, and when I do read articles, I usually go for the shorter ones that I have time to read from beginning to end.

It's no coincidence that almost all of the currently featured articles are short poems. It's not that longer articles are getting bad votes; they just aren't getting as many votes.
