There was a cat who had the misfortune of being born without an appreciation for fish. It affected his senses so much that he regarded all fish inedible. For the first year of his life this quirk caused him no trouble, but then...
He was bought by an elderly couple with an insatiable hunger for foods made of fish. There were always plenty of leftovers from the lunch table, and always they were given to the cat, and always he had to refuse. The elderly couple, with their small pensions, could not withstand this impact of food going to waste, and so they had to give up the cat.
A new page was turned in his life. He became an alley cat, scouring the dumpsters for his daily non-fish dinners and getting into brawls with the other, more tough-skinned and sharp-whiskered cats of the streets. But as time went by, he learned to frequent the safest streets and to recognize which neighborhoods produced the most edible refuse for him.
Since the other cats did not much mind garbage that had no fish, he was able to find his own niche in the world. He lived quite happily -- though always a bit dirty and scraggy -- for the rest of his nine lives, which amounted to nearly five years in total.
