The Road to Nowhere

The Road to Nowhere

A comedic-fantasy about the life of an average adventurer - probably PG-13 reading.

    The Pros
An interesting spin on gargantuan fantasy novels; you take a seemingly cliche idea (Dungeons and Dragons style adventure) and give it a much needed sense of humor. Like Micheal said, it wasn't a gutbuster, but it was entertaining and fresh, with many good moments. (Especially the 'hanging manhood' part. Kudos.)
    The Cons
A few grammatical crimes, punctutation is key. Not too much else to nag you about.
    Final Thoughts
I liked it. Hope to see more stuff like it from you in the future.

  • A well-written story with a few imperfections.

    The Pros
I've got to be honest: I skipped past the tagline when I first started reading this, so I wasn't expecting comedy. Needless to say, I was a bit confused, at first, when I got to the parts implying troll-on-human rape... which, by the way, isn't something you'd normally see in a fantasy story, so I have to give you some originality points there.

In all seriousness, it was a pretty funny story -- not laugh-out-loud funny, but still a decent parody of the fantasy genre. Almost everything here would fit nicely into a non-comedic fantasy, exceptions being the remarks about the main character's intelligence and the whole nudity bit. (By the way, the part about his "manhood swinging wildly" was hilarious.)

The story was also very well written -- great vocabulary, nice descriptions, good spelling and grammar, et cetera. I didn't see a whole lot of careless typos, which proves that you put some effort into this.
    The Cons
There were, however, some problems with punctuation. There were many places where you had run-on sentences, which easily could have been split into two sentences by changing a comma to a period. In other places, there were commas missing, causing a sentence to run together where there should have been a pause.

In addition, there are some problems with quotations. Punctuation (such as the period at the end of a quote) should be inside the quotation marks, and when dealing with character dialogue, there's usually a comma before and after a quotation.

Aside from punctuation, the only issue I had with the story was a bit of repetition. When the main character finds the second man, you describe how he's "slumped face down on the table" twice. Toward the end of the story, you also say the second man "lowered the axe" twice. There were a few other places where you used one word twice in two consecutive sentences. (Try to make sure this doesn't happen; it sounds a bit redundant.)
    Final Thoughts
Overall, it was a good story (hence the thumbs-up), and although I'm not a big fan of fantasy, the humor aspect kept me entertained. The "cons" I pointed out were only minor problems, so don't worry too much about that. Just keep an eye out for those problems when you write your next story.

    The Pros
It's not very often I see a fantasy story on the site, so I'll start by saying thanks. I'm a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings series, and it seems that this one was somewhat inspired by it. You did a good job with the overall voice, and you were very descriptive with the setting. I liked your inclusion of a bit of humor, which is always good for a story of this genre.
    The Cons
There were a few spelling and grammatical errors, and your paragraph formatting was a bit faulty in some areas. Not a big deal, just something you should look into a bit.

In my opinion, the story could have used a few metaphors to spice up the description of scenes a bit. I also noticed a bit of humor, and maybe you could have extended that a bit more (if that is the direction you want to go in).
    Final Thoughts
Judging by the end of the story, this seems to be only a single chapter of a work in progress? If this is the case, then I will very much enjoy reading the next section when you decide to post it. Good job!

As I drove home through the pounding rain, my eyes straining to see the lanes on the parkway, I began to formulate my next poem. I find the thought process involved relaxing, and it makes the one and a half hour journey easier.

Once I arrive home, half exhausted by the drive and the day’s work I am greeted at the door by my dogs. This is one of the great pleasures of my life. The...
